Alongside our retreat spaces, we design and build a wide range of bespoke timber structures — from four poster beds and curved oak benches, to bridges, gates and treehouses. Many of these projects grew from the early roots of Zen Dens, when Hamish first began crafting unique pieces from timber. Whatever the scale, each project reflects the same commitment to thoughtful design, skilled craftsmanship and a deep respect for natural materials.

Four-poster beds can be built into the existing structure of your home or created as free-standing pieces, each one designed to suit your space and style. Carefully selected oak is chosen to complement its surroundings — whether windblown and weathered, reclaimed barn beams or repurposed fence posts — giving each bed a unique character and sense of history.

These stunning curved oak benches are handcrafted from windblown and weathered trees sourced through the National Trust. The natural ageing of the timber creates beautiful variation in colour and grain, giving each bench its own distinctive character. Trunks and branches are milled, cleft or chainsawn on site before being taken to the workshop where they are carefully shaped, jointed and assembled into the finished piece.

Single slabs of characterful waney-edged oak are the preferred choice for coffee table tops. The base design can vary to suit your style — from simple angled legs to a more traditional refectory table with a through-morticed stretcher, or a lapped Saracen cross with shelving and drawers beneath.

From complete storage solutions to updating existing cupboards with bespoke doors, each project is designed to complement the space it occupies. Materials and styles are carefully chosen together, whether oak shaker frames with mortice and tenon joints, cherry panels, or reclaimed pine ledge-and-brace doors fixed with traditional rose-headed clench nails. Handles and hinges can be selected from quality fittings or custom-forged depending on the desired finish and budget.

A statement dining table can take many forms. Working closely with each client, I design tables that combine the right materials and proportions to suit both the space and the way it will be used. Traditional joinery techniques ensure every piece is built with strength, longevity and timeless character.

Long summer lunches are made even better around a beautifully crafted outdoor table. These bespoke garden pieces are designed to bring people together, comfortably seating family and friends. Built from high-quality locally sourced oak and joined using traditional methods, they are made to endure both the elements and many years of gatherings.

Play is one of the most important ways children learn about the world. Thoughtfully designed play structures encourage balance, coordination, confidence and creativity, all while allowing children the freedom to explore and imagine.
Each Zen Dens playground is designed to feel natural within its setting, using beautiful timber and carefully crafted forms that invite climbing, balancing and discovery. Built with safety, durability and imagination in mind, these spaces create joyful environments where children can challenge themselves, build confidence and simply enjoy being outdoors.

There is something timeless about a bridge — a sense of adventure, independence and the journey to the other side. Our bridges are structurally engineered yet carefully designed to sit lightly within the landscape, providing access over brookes, ditches and ponds.
Combining structural ingenuity with fine timber craftsmanship, our bridges offer a magical gateway for both children and adults. Whether used for play, reflection or for simply taking a walk to escape the bustle of everyday life, each bridge provides a unique adventure within nature.
